The point of this here blogge is to write about what it means to simultaneously be a practicing artist and teaching artist in our contemporary culture and treating this dual profession with hope, sincerity, critical analysis and above all, honesty.
So often I find that the struggles to be both teacher and artist are glossed over in favor of focusing on the work or the kids. Well, of course! The work and the kids are my primary objectives, but what happens when the checks don’t come in a timely manner or my classes unexpectedly don’t run? Like any other human being, the life part permeates every aspect of what I do professionally. I intend to honor all those joyful and unwelcome surprises here, hoping always for the best but purposefully shining a light on the worst aspects in the interest of being honest and hopefully empowering both myself and others to address these uncomfortable issues and get them solved.
Because that is how the best work gets done!
